Richard Bettan's main practice area is complex civil litigation.

Since joining the firm, Mr. Bettan's practice has focused on a variety of matters, including the defense of a $20 billion private company against claims brought by one of the world's largest public companies; the defense of a major accounting firm in connection with litigation concerning its audit work for a former client; a litigation concerning the non-payment of a finder's fee earned in connection with the acquisition of a preeminent NFL franchise; and a litigation concerning the undisclosed sale of syndicate shares and breeding rights in leading thoroughbred stallions.

While at the University of Virginia School of Law, Mr. Bettan represented an indigent defendant before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, challenging the district court's summary dismissal of the defendant's habeas corpus petition.

Prior to law school, Mr. Bettan served as Deputy Finance Director for the successful re-election campaign of Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-Rhode Island).
