Since joining the firm in March 2006, Edward Baker's practice has focused on antitrust litigation, principally the firm's representation of American Express in American Express v. Visa U.S.A et al. (S.D.N.Y. 2004). Mr. Baker also has extensive litigation experience in the area of health care fraud and compliance. Case highlights from his previous firm include: pre-trial representation of a TAP Pharmaceutical Inc. district manager criminally indicted, along with thirteen other defendants, for pharmaceutical sampling and kickback violations in U.S. v. MacKenzie et al. (D.Mass. 2004) (commonly referred to as the “TAP trial”); settlement of Medicaid fraud charges brought by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office against a leading provider of orthotics and prosthetics; and representation of a senior pharmaceutical executive and sales reps in separate on-going federal health care fraud investigations into possible kickback and off-label marketing violations. He also has considerable experience in the area of general commercial litigation.

Mr. Baker maintains an active pro bono practice. He is currently representing a refugee from the Sierra Leonean civil war in political asylum proceedings before the U.S. Immigration Court. He has also successfully represented applicants for federal disability benefits before the U.S. Social Security Administration. In addition, from 2001 through 2005, he was the Pro Bono Coordinator for the New Lawyers Section of the Boston Bar Association. In this capacity he initiated the annual BBA Holiday Pro Bono Reception and BBA Pro Bono Marathon, which in 2005 involved Medicare Part D outreach to low-income seniors. He has participated in the BBA Law Day in the schools, Housing Court for the Day, and Walk to the Hill, and he has twice coordinated his previous firm’s participation in the Discovering Justice/Citizen Schools Legal Apprenticeship Program (LAP), a 10-week mock trial program for junior high school students.

During law school, Mr. Baker founded a student organization devoted to critical reflections on the study and practice of law, and served as a judicial intern to Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser. He was elected Class Orator at his law school graduation.

Mr. Baker is active in various sections of both the American Bar Association and the Boston Bar Association. In 2005 and 2006 he was co-chair of the Boston Chapter of the ABA White Collar Crime Young Lawyer’s Subcommittee. In October 2005, he was program co-chair for the BBA Advanced Healthcare Fraud and Compliance Workshop.

Mr. Baker was elected a “Rising Star” in 2006 by his peers in the Boston legal community, as published in the May 2006 issue of Boston Magazine.
