Boies Schiller Flexner LLP today announced that Gianluca Faella has joined the firm as a partner in its Rome office. Gianluca will focus on competition matters within Italy and the European Union, as well as cross-border antitrust-related disputes involving our U.S. and U.K. practices.
Gianluca has extensive experience navigating client issues involving antitrust, economic regulation, State aid and foreign subsidies, golden power, unfair commercial practices, intellectual property, EU law, and complex commercial matters. At BSF, he will handle a wide range of matters, including antitrust investigations and litigation, economic regulation, EU law, and issues arising with foreign investments and subsidiaries in Italy and the EU.
“Gianluca is a strong addition as we look to continue to grow internationally,” said Chairman Matthew L. Schwartz. “He has experience working on important competition issues on both sides of the Atlantic, and he has handled cases before both the Italian and EU courts, strengthening our disputes-related offering inside the EU.”
Gianluca has represented Italian and international clients in high-stakes and precedent-setting matters before civil and administrative courts, EU courts, and arbitral tribunals, and in proceedings before the European Commission and national antitrust and regulatory authorities. He is admitted before the Italian superior courts and has extensive experience handling cases before the Court of Cassation, the Council of State, and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
“Throughout its history, Boies Schiller Flexner has been involved in many of the most significant antitrust cases,” Gianluca said. “BSF was the right choice for me at this stage of my career because of the strength of its brand and antitrust practice in the U.S. and the opportunity to establish and grow that capability in Italy and across the EU. I’m excited to continue to work on Italian and EU competition issues, while also building relationships throughout the firm to help clients navigate competition and regulatory challenges on a global scale.”
Gianluca’s practice covers a broad spectrum of highly regulated industries, including electronic communications, media, postal services, energy, pharmaceuticals, transport, banking, insurance, and food. In addition to litigation, he provides strategic, business-oriented advice, helping clients manage legal risks and design commercial strategies, policies and agreements that support growth in highly regulated markets.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gianluca to the Italy-based BSF team,” Milan-based partners Alessia Alegretti, Luigi Macioce, and Stefano Zonca said. “His experience before the Italian courts and the EU are a perfect complement to our existing capabilities in the region, and we anticipate that his significant focus on antitrust issues will create additional opportunities to work more closely with our U.S. and U.K. colleagues.”
Gianluca serves as associate professor of economy law at Università degli Studi Link in Rome where he teaches antitrust, regulation, and intellectual property, and as an adjunct professor of law and economics at Luiss Guido Carli University. He joins the firm from the Rome office of a global U.S.-based law firm.
In addition to Gianluca’s hire, BSF announced that litigator Michael Demarco will work with the firm as of counsel in the New York office. A trial lawyer with a focus on civil litigation and white-collar criminal cases, Michael is a Fellow of The International Academy of Trial Lawyers and The International Society of Barristers. For both organizations, fellowship is extended by invitation only to 500 of the best trial lawyers in the U.S. and 30 foreign countries.
