BS&F and Bank of New York Mellon Speak On $22 Billion Russian Litigation
Bloomberg, Dow Jones Newswires, The Associated Press, Reuters, April 8, 2008
Reporting on BS&F client The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation's conference call and live simultaneous webcast on Monday, April 7, 2008, in which BS&F co-founder and managing partner Jonathan Schiller joined Robert P. Kelly, chief executive officer, and Matthew L. Biben, executive vice president and chief litigation counsel to discuss with financial analysts the Russian Federal Customs Service lawsuit against The Bank of New York for $22.5 billion to recover treble damages for lost tax revenue from a money transfer scheme administered by a rogue Bank employee in the late 1990s without the knowledge of the Bank. "Mr. Schiller said the bank has looked into the legal situation in 90 countries where the bank has a presence and is confident that any judgment against the bank would not result in any claims," reported the New York Sun. "This is not the first time that Mr. Schiller has battled these trial lawyers. Boies Schiller, which represented Philip Morris Cos., defeated the trial lawyers when they represented the governments of Honduras and Belize and some Brazilian states and cities in suing tobacco companies for deliberately concealing knowledge of the dangers of smoking."
