Joshua Riley, the former General Counsel to Senator Al Franken, has rejoined the law firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner as Counsel in its Washington, D.C., office.

“I am delighted to welcome Josh back to the firm and to our talented Washington office, where he will bring his government experience to bear on our regulatory work and our Crisis Management and Government Response practice,” said Boies, Schiller & Flexner Managing Partner Jonathan Schiller. “He has exactly the credentials we look for in Washington: he is an outstanding lawyer who knows the political atmosphere and understands crisis management.”

Mr. Riley will advise parties in disputes involving governmental authorities and in other crisis management matters.

In three years as General Counsel to Senator Franken, Mr. Riley negotiated legislative text, drafted speeches, and gave advice on pending votes. He also organized and worked on Committee hearings on a wide range of policy and oversight matters. His portfolio included net neutrality; telecommunications industry mergers; Federal Arbitration Act reform; campaign finance law after Citizens United; the Voting Rights Act after Shelby County; and reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

“Josh is an exceptionally skilled attorney whose sound counsel I have relied on for over three years,” said Senator Franken, a Democrat from Minnesota. “He is brilliant and hardworking, and he has served the people of Minnesota with true dedication. While I am sad to see him leave, I am confident he will continue to achieve great things.”

Earlier in his career, Mr. Riley spent three years as an Associate in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office. He also has served as a law clerk for Judge Kim Wardlaw of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and he has worked on various political campaigns and Capitol Hill staffs. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, and he received a bachelor’s degree in political science from The College of William and Mary in Virginia.

Boies, Schiller & Flexner is one of the premier law firms in the United States, regularly serving as lead counsel in the biggest, highest-profile disputes and representing some of the world’s largest and most sophisticated organizations when the results matter most.
