Boies, Schiller & Flexner is delighted to announce the appointment of London arbitration partner Wendy Miles to Queen’s Counsel. She is one of only five English solicitor-advocates named in the roll call this year, which included the appointment of 88 barristers.  Ms. Miles will be formally appointed at a ceremony in London on February 16, 2015.

A limited number of senior barristers and solicitor-advocates are made Queen's Counsel as a mark of outstanding ability. The process is merit-based, in accordance with a rigorous framework of skills, experience and competencies in the field of advocacy.

“Wendy’s appointment brings honour to her in her career, and to our firm, in which she plays an important role,” said Boies, Schiller & Flexner Managing Partner Jonathan Schiller

Ms. Miles, who heads the firm’s international arbitration practice, joined litigation powerhouse Boies, Schiller & Flexner in London in September of 2014.  She adds further depth to the firm’s first international office, which acts for clients in their most important international disputes.

“Wendy is a talented lawyer who has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top lawyers in the field of international arbitration,” said London Managing Partner Natasha Harrison. “Her appointment to Queen’s Counsel recognizes her outstanding advocacy skills and is a reflection of the best-in-class trial lawyers serving the clients of the firm.”

Candidates for Queen’s Counsel are assessed by members of the judiciary, peers and clients and interviewed by an independent panel in London.  The Lord Chancellor makes his recommendation to the Queen who, in turn, approves the appointments.

“It is a real honour to be appointed Queen’s Counsel and to have had the opportunity to work with such great clients, lawyers, firms, judges and arbitrators and institutions over the years,” said Ms. Miles. “So many people have provided so much encouragement and support along the way.”

Ms. Miles is an experienced barrister and solicitor qualified in England and New Zealand. She represents clients in major international commercial arbitration and public international law and litigation proceedings in the financial services, manufacturing, licensing, telecommunications, insurance, construction, and energy sectors. She was lead co-counsel for South Sudan in the Abyei Arbitration, a major boundary delimitation proceeding conducted under the auspices of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

She has acted as advisor and advocate for a number of international companies and states or state parties in arbitration proceedings conducted in various jurisdictions, including the International Chamber of Commerce Court of Arbitration, the London Court of International Arbitration, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Court, the Singapore International Arbitration Court, the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, ICSID and UNCITRAL. She also represents clients in ad hoc arbitration and public international law.

Ms. Miles is a member of the ICC Court of Arbitration and Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Board of Trustees.  She regularly sits as an arbitrator in commercial disputes and teaches in the field of arbitration, including as a founding member of the Executive Committee for the Geneva-based Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy.
