BSF partners Mike Gottlieb and Josh Riley were named Litigators of the Week by the American Lawyer’s Litigation Daily for their work on a federal defamation lawsuit brought on behalf of Aaron Rich, the brother of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich, to combat false conspiracy theories about Seth’s murder in the summer of 2016.
Litigation Daily praised an “important victory” in which the Washington Times retracted and apologized for a previously published column pursuant to a settlement negotiated for Rich by Gottlieb, Riley, and BSF associate Meryl Governski.
“We do it because it is important and just,” Gottlieb said in an interview with the publication. “We have seen ordinary peoples' lives ruined by conspiracy theorists.”
Riley added: “We hope this case sends the message that litigation can play a role in the defense of objective truth. Free speech is essential to our democratic values, but so is basic human decency.”
