The firm secured another major post-trial victory in the landmark privacy class action against Google. Chief Judge Richard Seeborg of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California awarded $146.8 million in attorneys’ fees following last summer’s $425 million jury verdict.
Granting BSF’s motion in full, Judge Seeborg awarded one-third of the recovery, along with the requested service awards for the class representatives. The award represents the largest percentage of a common fund ever granted in a California district court megafund case. In approving the request, the court found the fee award was “warranted by the extraordinary nature of the case as well as by the exemplary performance of counsel.”
The case was brought on behalf of more than 98 million users who alleged that Google unlawfully collected, stored, and used information about consumers’ activities on third-party apps, despite their decision to opt out of tracking.
