Overview

Founder and Managing Partner Jonathan Schiller established the firm’s International Arbitration practice at the firm’s inception and has built a global team to lead our clients in complex commercial and investor-state dispute practices. The firm’s lawyers are fluent in public international law, with exceptional jurisdictional diversity.

The International Arbitration practice is led by lawyers in London, New York, Washington D.C., and Miami—a key gateway to Latin American disputes. We represent clients before all major arbitral institutions, including the ICC, LCIA, ICSID, AAA, VIAC and NASD, as well as in UNCITRAL and other ad hoc arbitrations. In 2016, we brought a successful LCIA claim in Athens for OPAP over the Greek state’s appropriation of OPAP’s license rights in the Greek lottery. Recent work also includes arbitrations sited in Athens, Brussels, Dubai, Doha (Qatar), Geneva, The Hague, London, New York, Paris, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Stockholm, Vienna, Vietnam, Zurich, and Washington D.C. Our lawyers are fluent in more than a dozen languages and qualified in numerous international jurisdictions.

We are business-minded lawyers who understand that international arbitration may be part of a broader international strategy with parallel proceedings which may include civil litigation, regulatory and legislative proceedings, mediation, commercial negotiations and media communications. Our counseling is augmented by our skills in crisis management, economic and damages analysis, our experience in international enforcement proceedings, and our understanding of the operational success of enterprises. We draw on legal intelligence through complementary practices at Boies Schiller Flexner, and offer innovative fee arrangements to our clients.

Clients in financial services, manufacturing, telecommunications, insurance, energy, mining, construction, gaming and other industries value our entrepreneurial approach to international arbitration and our command of public international law. We identify and collaborate closely with the best local counsel in a relevant jurisdiction when necessary.

Our public international law expertise enables our lawyers to deal with states and state entities, sovereign immunity and related issues, in both private and public international law claims involving states and state assets.

Members of our team have sat as arbitrator for most leadings institutions, including the ICC, ICSID, PCA, AAA and others, as well as in ad hoc proceedings. They also chair or vice-chair committees such as the IBA Arbitration Committee, and serve as Vice-President of the ICC Court of Arbitration. Chambers USA 2016 recognized the “formidable” Jonathan Schiller as “very commercially astute and assertive.”
